It was diffcuilt to find time to work on this simple task. Finally I had a chance to work on it and got it done. I experimented with different artistic styles and wanted to try and keep it simple (as you see it now) and will probably add more detail later. Meanwhile, the more I thought about it, the more I thought that I might want to create some kind of series for this design, such as Monkey Pirates, Parrot Pirates, etc. and create the characters around a story. I will see if people love and want to see more similar designs, then I will go from there. Octopus Pirate is already up and can be purchased online and the best part is it also sells as a skatedeck at Zazzle.com, so I personally would love to get one for myself real soon!

Client, Ron, who I know from way back in my college days (when I was adjunct faculty). Ron was involved with the Faribault Deaf Club softball team. Funny, he’s a graphic designer and I was guessing he must have his hands full with work. Turned out I was partly right. The reason he decided to not do the project himself was because he felt he would have a hard time to make decisions and that he would keep changing the design and delay the project and several other reasons, too. The process was not easy in the beginning with because the client knew exactly what he was looking for and I learned that I really need to make changes in my process so that I will do a lot better with future clients. It was a very good experience.

The goal was to create a black, gray, and white color design in the shape of a cool viking that they can use it for their softball hat and t-shirt jersey. I’m looking forward to see the result on the products for their team. I just love illustration work, using this style and technique, very much and I am really really looking forward to illustrating more similar designs in future!

The owner is my wife’s co-worker’s husband. They really liked the idea of using a lens in their logo design, but wanted to be sure it was distinguished and a “video camera lens” because most people can’t tell the difference between a camera and video camera lens. After several rough ideas, they decided they really liked the “M” on the lens to better brand their company name. I really enjoyed creating several mock up designs for this company and perhaps we will have a chance to use the designs they didn’t choose in the future.

Scale Crusher 2011 was a success, but we wanted to change up the logo for a new and better design for Scale Crusher 2012. I came up with several ideas quickly and I really enjoy working through the conception and design process. Here’s a few mock up designs we considered before narrowing it down to the final design. Funny story…the SportsMX CEO preferred to not use the weightlifting design that was used previously because if you wear on a t-shirt, it kind of put the weights on each end of the bar in a peculiar section of an individual’s chest. The best part about the final design is that the CEO loves it and really liked the meter arrow that it points to where your heart is if you wear the design on a T-shirt.

SportsMX is now coordinating their second annual activities for this event and they thought they’d use the same design as last year, but we discussed it and I felt it should be changed even if just a little bit to keep the event fresh and exciting. One thing I enjoy about SportsMX is they got feedback from their audience about this logo and they didn’t recognize the fangs on the beach monster so they would like to be more obvious this year. Also I added the word “Volleyball” and a volleyball net to represent that this is a volleyball event because last year it didn’t mention so people thought the event was a mix of a variety of beach related activities and not just a volleyball tournament. Also, they would like to remove the monster’s eyes. The Beach Beast Team really liked the new and updated logo very much.

I’m looking forward to designing more in the future and discovering my true art style. Right now, I’m just playing with ideas and working on different illustration styles so time will soon tell where my design skills will take me. I will add products with this design to different online shops so you can go to the “Shop” page and check out where all the online shops are. Enjoy!

Thanks to the power of networking, SportsMX was referred by a real good friend of mine, Hui Zhang, for a project. I have worked for SportsMX occasionally in the past. The project consisted of creating a really cool design for the SportsMX website. In this project, I helped the client to create a unique and attractive design for Beach Beast 2011 (volleyball tournament). They planned to use the design on t-shirts, advertisements, and flyers, etc. This event is their first official annual tournament so the original design needed to be revamped and made into something unique. In the original design, there was a volleyball logo, but the key theme for the event was evident in their title…”Beast,” which was missing. In our redesign I made sure the capture the true identity of the event to help the client to attract more participants.

It was really important to the client that the design was represented by using “Beast” from the title. The words that came to mind were tough and extreme with California style. I designed several really cool cartoonish monsters that chomped the volleyball. The clients were pleased with the design and I believe it will help them to attract participants in the event and improve their event profit. It’s an easy design with a simple color theme and was pretty fascinating. In the end, I was in awe of the outcome. I imagine that adults and kids alike will love to wear their t-shirts with the revamped design. Which brings us to our next project! I really love doing this kind of stuff!

Last week, Jamie, who I have known since kindergarten, decided that he is wanted to dive into photography and pursue his dream of a start-up photography business. That’s when he also decided that he would be in need of a logo design. We were discussing a name for his business and originally he came up with “Kitchen Photography” because his last name is Kitchen. However, after much discussion he decided that he didn’t want to send the message to his clients that “Kitchen Photography” only focused on food, restaurants and kitchen photos. Finally, after we discussed all the possibilities, he decided to use “J.A.K. Photography” to represent a business unique to him and to clearly articulate to his clients what type of service he provides. During the design process, I created a logo that really complimented the name of his new business. I created a simple and fun design using a variety of filigree, like a water splash and Victorian leaves along with a silhouette of a camera. We strongly believe this logo will be easily recognized and allow clients to learn the story of where it came from. We are both very pleased with how it looks and we know that the logo will brand his service in the future and we wish him a lot of luck!

Updated Aug 2011: After Jamie used his logo, he decided that he really wanted to add “Kitchen” in the logo design since lot of people thought that he should and because there is already some people operating under the “JAK Photography” name out there. Jamie wanted a name that was different and original so it’s now “J.A.Kitchen Photography.”
